Mecca Masjid Overview
Mecca Masjid, located in the heart of Hyderabad’s bustling old city, adjacent to Charminar in a finds place among the largest mosques in India and is the most important and largest one in Hyderabad city.
The construction of this mosque had started in 1614 by Sultan Muhammad Qutub Shah and it was Aurangzeb who then completed it in 1693. The name of this impressive mosque is reportedly derived from the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia on which it is modeled. Mecca Masjid can accommodate 10,000 worshipers at any time. The construction of the mosque was believed to have included bricks which were brought all the way from Mecca. A room in the courtyard is believed to house a sacred relic of Prophet Muhammad, the revered prophet of Muslims all over the world. Visitors coming to Charminar also visit th9s holy mosque, which lends a divine and unique aura to the old city of Hyderabad.
